Improving health seems to be something always on our minds. We humans seek out the best supplements and foods to keep us free of viruses, maintain a proper weight or gut microbiota as well as keep us out of the doctors office. The same is true for our pets – we can provide them the necessary nutrients to fill the voids their everyday diets may be missing.

There are three things I feel are so easy and beneficial that you can add to your pets everyday diet that will give them a boost of health, vitality and excitement!

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Many mass market bags of kibble may tout they have added omega-3 fatty acids in the bags, but truth is these fragile fats can oxidize (go rancid) very quickly, therefore defeating their purpose. Omega-3’s are important for brain, eye and heart health as well as a good anti inflammatory. One of the biggest visible changes you will see in your pet when they are fed a quality omega-3 fatty acid is improved skin and coat health. If you have an itchy, flaky and pet who sheds quite a bit, they are definitely in need of essential fatty acids! My favorite omega-3 to add is Ultra EFA from Rx Vitamins for Pets

High-Antioxidant Fruits and Vegetables

High temperatures from the kibble extrusion process can destroy the precious vitamins and minerals found in fresh fruits and vegetables. Many of the dark colored leafy greens and berries contain a high-antioxidant load which can help prevent cellular damage from free-radicals (think cancer causers). They are also important for healthy organs and curbing allergies and arthritis. Be sure to add some pureed blueberries, blackberries, red bell peppers, kale or swiss chard to your dogs bowl daily as a great topper to their meals!

Bone Broth

If you have a pet who has grown bored with their scoop of kibble, it may be time to switch their diet or add something more intriguing to their bowl. Bone broth is a wonderful addition as it not only activates the smells of the kibble, but also contains healthful properties that improve joint health, gut health, enhances hydration and improves digestion. Bone broth contains naturally occurring glucosamine and chondroitin as well as amino acids like glycine and arginine which are anti inflammatory. Bone broth is superior to cats who eat a kibble diet as it will provide extra moisture that is vitally needed in their diet. Check out Primal Pet Foods for their line of bone broths.

There are always things you can do to improve your pets health through their diet. Start simply and if you’re eating some blueberries or melon, give your dog a few in his bowl as well! Not only will they thank you externally, their bodies will be thanking you internally!
